The Color red has had a rich tradition in Modern Christmas décor but the color’s history goes back hundreds and even thousands of years. The blood of Christ has always been an important symbol of Christmas to Christians all another world. Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Jesus after all.
The red berries in holly and poinsettias have been common holiday décor for hundreds of years. The color red became synonymous with Santa’s coat in 1931 with a Coca-Cola print advertisement of the mythical Christmas character. Prior to the advertisement, Santa was depicted in mainly green and blue coats.
The color red continued its Christmas color tradition in the story “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer”, by Robert Lewis May. A song based on the original story was written by Johnny Marks in 1939. The song was made famous by Gene Autry and hit #1 on the US charts in 1949.
